Look for ways to say, “YES!”
Use effective rewards-based training to build a strong bond with your puppy. If you reward the behaviors you like, you’ll get more good stuff. Catch your puppy being the best! Mark happy behaviors (say “YES!”) and reward them. Soft, pea-sized, tasty treats work well to teach pups.
Ask for better behavior — and reward it!
If you don’t like puppy-biting, jumping up, or chewing on your socks, ask, “What would I like my pup to do instead?” Teach and reward helpful behaviors like grabbing a toy or putting all four paws on the floor.
Take your puppy on sniffaris. Bring treats!
One of the best things you can do for dogs: Let them sniff! Dogs enjoy the world through their noses. Slower sniff walks are great! Reward pups for exploring places, people, and things.
Don’t forget about nap time!
Yes, you want to teach your puppy, play with them, and introduce them to the world. It can be a lot! Fortunately, puppies also need sleep — a lot of sleep — and to learn to relax. Is your puppy being “extra”? Do they need a nap?
Teach them to love their vet visits!
With practice, your dog can learn to enjoy vet office visits and having their ears, eyes, and teeth examined. It’s worth teaching them for a lifetime of happy visits and great health care!
