Sept. 14, Everett: Shel Graves Animal Consulting at Sno-Isle Food Co-op with Fun Activities for Happy Dogs and Cat

When my spouse and I married and lived in Everett, we had a tiny studio apartment on Rucker Avenue. He had a part-time teaching job and I, just back from Peace Corps service, had a journalism internship at The Everett Herald.

The $100 fee to join Sno-Isle Food Co-op was a lift for us at the time, but it was one of the first things we did. Anyone can shop at the co-op, but we wanted the owner benefits and to be part of our community. Later, when our good friends moved to Everett we gifted them ownership, too.

We were vegetarian (now vegan) and there were groceries there we could not find other places. Plus, we liked the co-op model, supporting local farmers and producers, and being part of our community. I’ve been thinking a lot about how the co-op model might be a wonderful and helpful one for animal rescues and animal sanctuaries to adopt, too.

Twenty-seven years later (!) that $100 owner buy-in was a sound investment! It’s the same fee to join now. Amazing! Recently, in an Everett Facebook group someone asked: What's the best piece of advice you can give to someone that just moved to Everett? My answer: Join the co-op.

We’ve attended our share of co-op events over the years including anniversary parties and wine tastings. We've met our neighbors at the co-op often. I especially love the deli section with pre-made items like dragon tofu, Turkish chickpea salad, Bugs Bunny sandwiches, and vegan tempeh reubens. We’re also fans of the bulk food section.

The co-op is where I discovered my favorite kind of apple, the crisp, sweet fairy-tale beauty Arkansas Black, available only late fall. Local is where it’s at.

All of which is to say: I am very excited that Shel Graves Animal Consulting will be at the Sno-Isle Food Co-op at 3-5 pm, Sat., Sept. 14 for a free workshop Fun Activities for Happy Dogs and Cats

Paws up! It’s going to be a lot of fun! Bring your dog and cat behavior questions, too!
